Common questions
Do bile acid medicines dissolve every gallstone?
No. They work only on small to medium cholesterol-rich stones that show up as clear on X-ray, in people whose gallbladder still works. Calcified stones and pigment stones are not dissolved. A doctor decides after scans.
How long do they take to work?
Dissolving gallstones can take many months, up to two years in some people, with regular check-ups. Do not stop or change treatment without your doctor.
Are they used in pregnancy?
The UK product information says not to use ursodeoxycholic acid in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a baby.
