Medicines Used for Anaemia
Anaemia means the blood has too few healthy red blood cells or too little haemoglobin to carry oxygen around the body. It can cause tiredness and weakness. It has several causes, including too little folate or vitamin B12, so a doctor needs to find the cause before treatment.

Common questions
What are the signs of anaemia?
Extreme tiredness and low energy are common. With low vitamin B12 or folate there can also be pins and needles, a sore red tongue, mouth ulcers, and problems with memory or concentration. These have other causes too, so a doctor should check with a blood test.
Why does the cause of anaemia matter?
Different causes need different treatment. Folate deficiency is treated with folic acid, but vitamin B12 deficiency needs B12, and folic acid alone can hide B12 deficiency while nerve damage continues. A doctor finds the cause from symptoms and a blood test.
How long does treatment take?
It depends on the cause. For folate deficiency, folic acid tablets are usually taken for about four months. Vitamin B12 treatment may last until levels improve or may be lifelong. Follow your doctor's advice and do not stop on your own.
