Nausea is the feeling that you might be sick, and vomiting is bringing up what is in the stomach. Common causes include stomach bugs, food poisoning, pregnancy, motion sickness, migraine, alcohol and some medicines, and it usually settles within a day or two. Small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution (ORS) help prevent dehydration, and a doctor may prescribe an anti-sickness medicine such as domperidone or ondansetron if needed. Get urgent medical help for vomiting blood or green fluid, severe stomach pain, signs of dehydration, or vomiting with chest pain or a stiff neck.

Common questions
When should I see a doctor for vomiting?
See a doctor if vomiting lasts more than 2 days, keeps coming back, or you cannot keep fluids down. Get urgent help for blood or green fluid in vomit, severe stomach pain, a sudden severe headache or stiff neck, very little urine, confusion, or vomiting with chest pain.
What helps with dehydration from vomiting?
Take small sips of water or oral rehydration solution (ORS) often, for example every few minutes, rather than large drinks. Babies, older people, pregnant women and people with diabetes or kidney disease become dehydrated more easily and should see a doctor sooner.
