Medicines Used for High cholesterol

Also in: ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ଓଡ଼ିଆ

High cholesterol means there is too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in the blood. It usually causes no symptoms and is found by a blood test. Over time it can build up in the artery walls and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke. A healthy diet and activity help, and some people also need prescription medicines such as statins.

Common questions

Does high cholesterol cause symptoms?

Usually not. Most people feel well, so it is found by a blood test. A doctor can say whether a test is needed and how to read the result, taking into account age, family history, diabetes, blood pressure and smoking.

What is LDL cholesterol?

LDL is often called 'bad' cholesterol because too much of it can build up in the artery walls and narrow them. HDL is called 'good' cholesterol because it helps carry cholesterol away. Ask your doctor what your own numbers mean.

Can diet and exercise lower cholesterol?

Yes, for many people. Eating less saturated fat, eating more fruit, vegetables and fibre, being active, and not smoking all help. Some people, including those with an inherited form, also need prescription medicines. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
