An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) is a condition where the thyroid gland in the neck makes too much thyroid hormone. Signs include a fast or irregular heartbeat, anxiety, trembling, heat sensitivity, tiredness, weight loss and sometimes a swelling in the neck. The most common cause is Graves' disease. Treatment may be antithyroid tablets, radioiodine or surgery, chosen with a hormone specialist, so see a doctor if you think you may have it.
