An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is a condition where the thyroid gland in the neck does not make enough thyroid hormone. Common signs are tiredness, feeling cold, weight gain, constipation and low mood, and they usually develop slowly. It is usually treated with levothyroxine tablets, which replace the missing hormone and are usually taken for life, with blood tests to check the dose. See a doctor if you think you may have it, because many of the symptoms have other causes.
