Type 2 diabetes is a long-term condition where insulin works poorly or is too low, so blood sugar stays high. Over time high blood sugar can harm the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart. It is managed with healthy eating, physical activity, regular checks and, for many people, medicines such as metformin that a doctor prescribes. See a doctor if you are very thirsty, pass urine often, feel very tired or lose weight without trying.
