What is Limcee 500 used for?

Limcee 500 is a vitamin C supplement. It is used to make up for too little vitamin C in the diet, as the label or a doctor advises.

  • Making up a shortfall of vitamin C in the diet
  • Treating or preventing vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) when a doctor advises it

How does Limcee 500 work?

Vitamin C helps protect cells and is needed for the skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage, and for wounds to heal. A tablet adds to the vitamin C you get from food. The body does not store it, so any extra is passed out in the urine.

What happens in your body after you take it

  1. You chew the tablet

The chewable tablet breaks down in the mouth and the vitamin C passes into the stomach.

  2. It is absorbed in the gut

Vitamin C is absorbed from the intestine into the blood.

  3. The body uses it

Vitamin C is used by cells, and in making connective tissue in skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage.

  4. The extra is passed out

The body cannot store vitamin C, so what is not needed leaves in the urine. This is why it is needed regularly.

How to take Limcee 500

Take Limcee 500 exactly as printed on the pack or as your doctor has advised. Your doctor or pharmacist can say how many tablets are suitable for you.

  • Chew or suck the tablet as the pack directs; do not swallow it whole unless the pack says it is fine.
  • Do not take more than the label says. Supplements above 1,000 mg of vitamin C a day can cause stomach pain, diarrhoea and wind (NHS).
  • If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, unless it is almost time for the next one. Do not take two doses together.
  • Check other products you take, such as multivitamins, for added vitamin C.

Side effects of Limcee 500

Vitamin C at the label amount is usually well tolerated. Larger amounts can upset the stomach.

Uncommon or mild

  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Wind (flatulence)

Rare but serious: get medical help

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing (an allergic reaction). Get medical help immediately
  • Severe or persistent stomach pain or diarrhoea

Who should be careful

Most people can take vitamin C, but a few need to check with a doctor first.

  • Do not take more than the label says; more than 1,000 mg a day in supplements can cause stomach pain, diarrhoea and wind
  • A history of kidney stones, kidney disease or iron overload: ask a doctor first
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement
  • Diabetes: check the pack for sugar content, as some chewable tablets are sweetened
  • Allergy to vitamin C or any ingredient in the tablet

Medicines and things that interact with Limcee 500

Limcee 500 is not known to have many serious interactions at label amounts. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about everything you take, including other vitamins and herbal remedies.

  • Other vitamin C or multivitamin products: the vitamin C adds up, so check the total
  • Iron-containing medicines: vitamin C can increase how much iron is absorbed; ask a doctor if you take iron regularly

If someone takes too much

A single extra tablet is unlikely to cause serious problems, but large amounts can cause stomach pain and diarrhoea. If someone has taken much more than the label says, ask a doctor or pharmacist, or call 112 or go to the nearest hospital if they are unwell, and take the pack with you.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date. Check the pack for the exact storage instructions.

Regulatory status in India

Sold in India as a vitamin C product. Single-ingredient vitamin C is not on the CDSCO list of medicines banned under section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Whether this pack is labelled as a medicine or a food supplement, and whether it needs a prescription, must be confirmed from the pack.

Other brands with the same medicine

Chewable vitamin C 500 mg tablets are sold under other brand names. They contain the same vitamin; check the label for the strength and any other ingredients.

Other strengths and forms

Vitamin C is sold in different strengths and forms, including tablets, effervescent tablets and drops. The strength and contents are printed on the pack and differ between products, so check the label of the one you have.

Common questions

What is Limcee 500 used for?

It is a vitamin C supplement used to make up for too little vitamin C in the diet. Vitamin C helps keep skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage healthy and helps wounds heal. A varied diet usually provides enough, so a doctor or pharmacist can say whether you need it.

Is Limcee 500 a prescription medicine?

This depends on how the pack is labelled, so check the pack for the schedule. A doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether it is suitable and for how long to take it.

Can I take Limcee 500 every day?

The body cannot store vitamin C, so it is needed regularly, but a varied diet usually provides enough. Whether to take a supplement every day is a question for your doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the amount on the label.

What happens if I take too much vitamin C?

Taking more than 1,000 mg a day in supplements can cause stomach pain, diarrhoea and wind, which usually stop once you stop the supplement. Check the strength on the pack and any other products you use.

Can I take Limcee 500 during pregnancy?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any supplement in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. They can tell you whether it is needed and at what amount.

What is the difference between Limcee 500 and vitamin C 500 mg?

Limcee is a brand name, and vitamin C is the active ingredient. Other chewable vitamin C 500 mg tablets contain the same vitamin. Check the strength and ingredient list on the pack.
