Common questions

When is anxiety a medical condition?

When worry is hard to control, lasts for months and interferes with sleep, work or relationships. Physical signs include restlessness, tiredness, palpitations and muscle tension. A doctor can assess it.

How is anxiety treated?

Usually with talking therapy such as CBT, self-help measures like exercise and good sleep, and sometimes a prescription medicine. Cutting down caffeine and alcohol helps. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.

Can medicines for anxiety be habit-forming?

Some can lead to dependence, and some need slow dose reduction. Use only what a doctor prescribes and do not share medicines.
