High blood pressure, also called hypertension, means the force of blood on the artery walls stays above a healthy level. It usually causes no symptoms, so it is found only by measuring. Over years it can damage the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes, and raises the risk of heart attack and stroke. Lifestyle changes help, and some people also need prescription medicines.

Common questions

What is a high blood pressure reading?

The NHS describes high blood pressure as 140/90 or higher when measured at a clinic, or 135/85 or higher when measured at home. Only a doctor can diagnose it, usually after several readings. Ask your doctor what your own readings mean.

Does high blood pressure always cause symptoms?

No. Most people have no symptoms, which is why it is called a silent condition. A headache or dizziness is not a reliable sign. The only way to know is to have blood pressure measured, so get it checked regularly.

Can lifestyle changes help with high blood pressure?

Yes. Eating less salt, being active, keeping a healthy weight, limiting alcohol and not smoking can lower blood pressure. Some people also need prescription medicines. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own; talk to your doctor.
