How does Zinc work?

Zinc is needed by many enzymes and for making new cells, which is why it matters for wound healing. Very high intakes reduce how much copper the body absorbs.

How to take Zinc

Follow the label or your doctor's advice. UK guidance (NHS) says adults need about 9.5 mg (men) and 7 mg (women) a day, which a varied diet usually provides.

Side effects of Zinc

Zinc at label amounts is usually well tolerated. Taking too much for a long time can cause problems.

Uncommon or mild

  • Nausea or an upset stomach, more likely on an empty stomach

Rare but serious: get medical help

  • Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing (an allergic reaction). Get medical help immediately
  • Signs of anaemia, such as unusual tiredness or paleness, after long-term high-dose use

Who should be careful

Zinc supplements are best kept to the label amount.

  • The NHS says not to take more than 25 mg of zinc supplements a day unless a doctor advises it
  • High doses over time reduce copper absorption, which can lead to anaemia and weaker bones
  • Check the zinc content of every supplement you take, as many multivitamins also contain it

If someone takes too much

A single extra tablet is unlikely to cause serious problems, but much larger amounts can cause vomiting and stomach pain. If someone has taken a large amount, ask a doctor or pharmacist, or call 112 or go to the nearest hospital if they are unwell.

Regulatory status in India

Zinc is not on the CDSCO list of medicines banned under section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Whether a zinc product is sold as a medicine or a food supplement depends on the product; check the pack.
